Landmark Bal Harbour hotel imploded

BAL HARBOUR, Fla. (AP) -- All that remains of a landmark hotel in Bal Harbour is debris.

The Sheraton -- which opened its doors to the public in 1956 as the Americana -- was imploded yesterday.

The hotel had accommodated John F. Kennedy and Frank Sinatra as well as hundreds of thousands of tourists over the years. It was designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus as part of a trilogy of hotels on Collins Avenue. The Fontainebleau and the Eden Roc were his other two creations.

The demolition cleared the way for the 350-unit condominium and 250-unit St. Regis Hotel.
