Quake rattles central Chile, triggers panic but no victims or damage
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A moderate earthquake rattled central Chile Saturday, causing alarm but no reported victims or damage.
The magnitude-5.8 quake struck at 3:23 p.m. local time and was centered about 95 miles northwest of Santiago, near the port city of Valparaiso, according to the Seismological Institute of the University of Chile.
Carmen Fernandez, head of the government's Emergency Bureau, said the quake sent people fleeing into the streets, but caused no injuries or damage.
The quake was felt across a stretch of about 370 miles, including this capital city of 5.5 million people.
